Tatung University has awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree to Mr. Gary Y.Y. Chou, founder of Zenitron Corporation and a distinguished alumnus of its first Electrical Engineering class, in recognition of his contributions to Taiwan’s electronics industry, semiconductor distribution, and long-standing commitment to education.
Mr. Chou began his career at Tatung Company, where he led the development of the world’s first portable 12-inch AC/DC black-and-white television, which sold five million units worldwide and helped advance Taiwan’s component industry. After further training at Toshiba in Japan, he returned to Taiwan to lead the development of its first color television, marking the beginning of the color broadcasting era.
He founded Zenitron in 1982, growing the company into a leading semiconductor distributor with a strong presence across Hong Kong and Greater China and annual revenues exceeding NT$40 billion.
In addition to his business achievements, Mr. Chou has contributed to education by teaching at Tatung University and Tatung Vocational High School, mentoring future generations of engineers.
University leaders praised his professional excellence, entrepreneurial vision, and lasting impact on industry and education, noting that the honor also reflects his lifelong connection to his alma mater.
